Scottish Terrier health issues and how to prevent them

Big Dog | December 4th, 2011

Scottish Terriers came to fame because of their exposure as presidential dogs. They are good companions but a little problematic in terms of health. This breed of dogs is known to have a number of genetic health concerns but nonetheless, manageable. It is very important to get a genetic health check of your dog’s parents to detect any hereditary problems. Here is a list of those common health issues and how it can be managed:

Scottish Terrier

1. Von Willebrand Disease

This is a hereditary disorder where bleeding is prolonged because of the absence of a clotting factor called von Willebrand factor. The focus in managing this condition would be to avoid the Scottish Terrier from bleeding. Make sure that the dog’s environment is free from objects that may cause even minor injuries to its body, especially the pads of its feet. Avoid taking the Scottie to areas that have rough surfaces such as rocky terrains. Check the dog’s body daily for any wounds and immediately treat it if any are detected.

2. Craniomandibular Osteopathy

This next condition is caused by excessive bone formation in the bottom jaw thus earning other names such as “Lion Jaw”. It usually occurs during the 3rd and 8th months of age and results in pain and discomfort during chewing. If this condition occurs, it is best to give your Scotty soft diet with plenty of water. Consult a vet as well to have your dog checked. Veterinarians usually prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling of the jaw.

3. Scottie Cramp

This autoimmune disease inhibits Scotties’ ability to walk. Low levels of serotonin (a brain chemical) causes brain pathways that control the muscle to go haywire. This usually occurs when the dog is under a lot of stress. Prevention would be avoiding the dog from being involved in stressful situations. Providing vitamin E supplements also is an effective treatment but should be consulted with a vet first.

The most famous Scottish Terrier

Big Dog | March 8th, 2011

One of the most famous Scottish Terrier on the world is Barney, the one that is the dog of the former U.S. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. Barney was often referred to as the ’First Dog’ and was such famous that he even had his own official web page that was part of the official White House website. This little dog also starred in 11 government film productions from 2002 to 2008, especially in Christmas videos of the White House. Not just the former president, but Barney has also been criticized by Russian president Vladimir Putin who told to Bush that a true world leader should own large and robust dogs, not small toy dogs like Barney.

As we can read in Barney’s biography, the Scottish Terrier breed is very playful and independent. They are also very intelligent and determined, so early socialization and obedience training is a must for this breed.

Is a Scottish Terrier a good choice for me?

Big Dog | October 30th, 2010

If you would like to have a dog that is extremely smart, independent and can make a good watchdog for the family, then this  breed may be ideal for you. These little dogs are dominant, they like to do things that are not really allowed by their owners and they can also be territorial. Therefore very early socialization and obedience training is advised. They usually don’t get on well with other dogs and pets, especially cats in the house. This breed is intolerant with smaller children, so it is advised to only leave bigger, considerate children alone with the dog. They require much exercise, play and run every day, but they can do well in a smaller apartment.

The coat of the breed is a dense, medium in length and coarse double coat that requires at least twice weekly brushing. The Scottish Terrier is an average shedder. They are prone to health issues like cataracts, skin problems and cancer of the bladder.

Training of these dogs is hard, as they are very dominant, therefore they require lots of patience, consistency and firmness from the trainer. Rewarding attitude and praise is an absolute must for them.

All in all, the Scottish Terrier is advised for single people or for families with older children, who would like to have a dog that is dominant and can be cocky, yet they are very lovely and smart.

I hope this few sentences will be able to help you decide whether the Scottish Terrier is the best breed for you.
