Scottish Terrier health issues and how to prevent them

Big Dog | December 4th, 2011

Scottish Terriers came to fame because of their exposure as presidential dogs. They are good companions but a little problematic in terms of health. This breed of dogs is known to have a number of genetic health concerns but nonetheless, manageable. It is very important to get a genetic health check of your dog’s parents to detect any hereditary problems. Here is a list of those common health issues and how it can be managed:

Scottish Terrier

1. Von Willebrand Disease

This is a hereditary disorder where bleeding is prolonged because of the absence of a clotting factor called von Willebrand factor. The focus in managing this condition would be to avoid the Scottish Terrier from bleeding. Make sure that the dog’s environment is free from objects that may cause even minor injuries to its body, especially the pads of its feet. Avoid taking the Scottie to areas that have rough surfaces such as rocky terrains. Check the dog’s body daily for any wounds and immediately treat it if any are detected.

2. Craniomandibular Osteopathy

This next condition is caused by excessive bone formation in the bottom jaw thus earning other names such as “Lion Jaw”. It usually occurs during the 3rd and 8th months of age and results in pain and discomfort during chewing. If this condition occurs, it is best to give your Scotty soft diet with plenty of water. Consult a vet as well to have your dog checked. Veterinarians usually prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling of the jaw.

3. Scottie Cramp

This autoimmune disease inhibits Scotties’ ability to walk. Low levels of serotonin (a brain chemical) causes brain pathways that control the muscle to go haywire. This usually occurs when the dog is under a lot of stress. Prevention would be avoiding the dog from being involved in stressful situations. Providing vitamin E supplements also is an effective treatment but should be consulted with a vet first.
